Principal architect J Nold Midyette has practiced architecture and planning since 1973, completing projects in Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Montana, Oklahoma, Kansas and Iowa. With offices in Boulder, Colorado and Santa Fe, New Mexico, we have accomplished complex and challenging designs ranging from multistory high rises and concert halls to large private residences and small additions.
Midyette Architects offers complete architectural and planning services in all aspects of the profession, with special expertise in commercial buildings, institutional and educational buildings, performance space, renovation and adaptive reuse, historic preservation and restoration, space planning, residential and interior design. Our commitment is to the design of award-winning projects completed on-time and on-budget that fulfill the goals and needs of the client.
In projects ranging from warehouses used for office space to places of research and assembly and old school buildings, we have gained a reputation for creative yet economical design, tailored to the needs of clients and end-users. Efficient but flexible planning of space has been an important element in the successful completion of projects within an allotted budget. In designing aesthetically pleasing buildings that meet the client’s requirements, and are readily adaptable internally and externally durable for a long period of time, the long-term viability of the building is ensured.
Within the past 25 years, Midyette Architects has successfully completed over 200 projects for a wide variety of building types. It is essential to recognize that every project must reflect the individual desires and requirements of the client and should be therefore tailored to fulfill their specific needs. Accordingly, our firm’s approach to design and idea generation involves a high level of interaction with clients and end-users.
“On-site” design sessions with the architect, owners and any other necessary groups are a regular part of the master planning and design process. These sessions determine program issues, functional relationships, goals and ideals, as well as the impact of these elements on the design of the physical environment.
Midyette Architects has completed over $150 million of construction over the past fifteen years, in projects ranging from $25,000 to over $20,000,000 and has tracked the actual costs of each project. This data, plus the data from regional and national sources, allows for proper budgeting and estimated costs of construction project. Midyette Architects also spends ample time, both on and off-site, doing contract administration during the construction process. This commitment to working with the contractor in limiting surprises and cost changes is a major factor in Midyette Architects’ success record of meeting budgets on all architectural projects.
J Nold Midyette, AIA, President and Principal, has had proven success in working with city, county and state governmental agencies. Mr. Midyette has worked closely with city and community groups, religious organizations, university officials and city staff in the master planning, architectural programming, and designing of many public and private facilities. These include the Boulder Public Library, 1433 Pearl Street, Citizen’s National Bank Building, the Boulder Arts Center, Peck Elementary School, the Boulder Carnegie Research Library, Boulder, Colorado; the City of Loveland Municipal Complex and Civic Center, Loveland, Colorado; the Old Main Chapel Theater & Heritage Center, Macky Auditorium, and the Hale Sciences Building, University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado; Hoch Auditorium Classroom Building, The University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas; the Los Alamos National Laboratories Library, Los Alamos, New Mexico; and the Louisville Public Library, Louisville, Colorado.
Our firm consists of a qualified and efficient production staff capable of generating all necessary project documents in-house. Projects are selectively chosen and the architectural staff has remained small in order to ensure the direct involvement of Principal J Nold Midyette in every step of the design process. AutoCAD Release 14, three-dimensional imaging capabilities, in-house plotting and printing facilities, and computerized accounting and project documentation contribute to a successful team environment that is capable of accurate and timely document development.
Midyette Architects has been established in Boulder, Colorado since 1973. Many successful projects completed by this firm include buildings for private business, public and community agencies. The firm’s experience in master planning, building renovations, remodels, adaptive re-use and building additions, combined with Midyette – architects’ dedication to quality and efficiency in design assures that any project will receive the time, attention and expertise required to ensure its successful completion.
Midyette Architects has ongoing successful working relationships with many governmental agencies, municipalities and universities, as well as private developers and single residential clients. We sincerely enjoy the varied architectural and personal experiences this type of practice requires, and have developed the ability to sensitively and creatively conceive, design and construct the “client’s dreams and requirements”. We have been honored with over 30 regional, state and local design awards for projects ranging from over 15 million dollars to less than 15 thousand dollars.
Sensitive, creative design solutions, developed with the client for complex and challenging projects that have been successfully completed on-budget and on-time have allowed us to continue a successful and fulfilling architectural practice. Midyette Architects has, by choice, become large enough to handle very large complex projects and yet remained small enough to allow Principal J Nold Midyette active participation and sincere interest and commitment in every project we undertake — large and small. Every client and their project, regardless of size, deserves the best possible design, most up-to-date solutions, extensive attention to detail, and fair, stringent administration of the contract during construction. Midyette – architects assures commitment to their projects by remaining a firm whose principal, architects and staff practice architecture by choice and sincerely enjoy the challenges and rewards the profession offers.
A truly successful project is not a project recognized due to the architect who designed it, but rather is recognized due to good design and function.
In any selection process, the selection committee must analyze and consider what makes one firm more desirable for a particular project than the other qualified teams. Midyette – architects has distinct core competencies:
– Advocacy design and implementation process that works effectively. Every team member takes part.
– Extensive renovation and addition work that has met budgetary and extremely tight time constraints.
– Ongoing expertise working with committees, administration and special interest groups throughout the design process.
– “On-site” team design approach, which includes “hands-on” input and decision making by all appropriate entities and individuals.
– Team approach rather than in-house to assure creative thinking and up-to-date expertise in architectural, mechanical, electrical and structural disciplines. A cohesive design team that has a proven record of working together is always maintained.
– Extensive contract administration experience during bidding/negotiation and construction phases. Commitment and expertise to work with the owner and contractor to monitor expenses to meet budgetary requirements.
– The ability, resources, experience, commitment and time to make and maintain the particular building project as a priority and to assure the project’s economic, functional and aesthetic success.
– Successful completion of complex public and private sector projects that were on-time and on-budget.
– An excellent reputation with our clients (we urge you to contact our client references) as well as colleagues.
Midyette Architects’ success with building renovations and adaptive reuse projects is due largely to our philosophy of design. There are three basic principles we emphasize and believe to be truly instrumental in developing successful, on-time, on-budget solutions for renovation projects:
1. Respect for the existing architecture and the architect. The existing design of a historic building is extremely valuable, and should be evaluated and acknowledged in the final design of the renovation. Every building has its own unique spirit and character. This is especially evident in University settings where the character of campus buildings helps create a positive atmosphere for learning and fellowship. By working with the existing spirit and interpreting it to fit the proposed functions of the renovation, an exciting, aesthetic and functional design solution will be developed that retains the flavor of the original design while responding to the current needs of the University.
2. Acceptance and expansion of significant existing design features: It is important to acknowledge the potential and the limitations of the existing design. Understanding how the building can be designed to feasibly and aesthetically incorporate the current needs of the client without “throwing” unnecessary amounts of money into making it what it is not, is key to successful appropriate design solutions.
3. Respect for the current needs and expectations of the client and the building end-users. One of the architect’s most important and critical tasks is to truly listen to the client and to the people who will be using the building. This helps to determine exactly what types of spaces and functions will be required in the building. Midyette – architects has developed a methodology for design that is extremely effective at determining the needs and desires of the client and incorporating these into successful design solutions.
